The title was a reference to Piers Anthony’s 1970’s/80’s fantasy novels set in the enchanted kingdom of Xanth, which was loosely modeled on Florida (where Anthony lives). For this series Laura portrayed Candy Shire, a fictitious composite character based on various 1960’s pop music icons, most notably Dusty Springfield. The exhibition featured a live performance by the Candy Shire Orchestra, Taylor backed by Tampa’s legendary Handshake Squad. The original studio was constructed of glass and produced some of the most notable films of the early part of the 20th century, including ‘Nosferatu’, ‘Metropolis’ and ‘The Blue Angel’. During the Weimar Period most of the great directors that eventually ended up in Hollywood filtered through Babelsberg. Had either or both of the two world wars been fought on U.S. soil the history of cinema might be very different.
