“Few people realize that Hollywood, as a world center of the movie art, was the chance by-product of two world wars.” Anita Loos

The ‘Babelsberg’ series was inspired by Babelsberg Film Studios founded in Germany in 1911. The original studio was constructed of glass and produced some of the most notable films of the early part of the 20th century, including ‘Nosferatu’, ‘Metropolis’ and ‘The Blue Angel’. During the Weimar Period most of the great directors that eventually ended up in Hollywood filtered through Babelsberg. Had either or both of the two world wars been fought on U.S. soil the history of cinema might be very different.

This series centers around a fictitious “lost” actress from the Weimar era, Elisabeth W., and the productions she would have appeared in under the glass ceiling of Babelsberg.

Nine hand-colored silver gelatin prints from the ‘Babelsberg’ series were presented at the inaugural exhibition of Three 04 Gallery in Tampa, Florida in September 2008.
